Definition.limx→af(x)=L means that f(x) can be made as close to L as we like by taking x close enough to a, with x=a. Formally: for every ε>0 there is a δ>0 such that 0<∣x−a∣<δ implies ∣f(x)−L∣<ε.
One-sided limits. The limit exists exactly when the left limit limx→a−f(x) and the right limit limx→a+f(x) both exist and are equal. The value f(a) itself plays no part.
Example 1.f(x)=x∣x∣ has left limit −1 and right limit +1 at 0, so limx→0f(x)does not exist.

Techniques for indeterminate forms
The forms 00, ∞∞, 0⋅∞, ∞−∞, 1∞, 00 and ∞0 need work.
1. Factor and cancel.limx→3x−3x2−9=limx→3(x+3)=6.
3. Divide by the highest power for rational functions as x→∞.
limx→∞5x2−x3x2+2=53.
If the degrees differ, the limit is 0 (top degree smaller) or ±∞ (top degree larger).
4. L'Hôpital's rule. If the limit has the form 00 or ∞∞, then limgf=limg′f′, provided the second limit exists. The rule can be applied again if the form persists.
limx→0sin3xe2x−1=limx→03cos3x2e2x=32.
limx→0x21−cosx=lim2xsinx=21.
5. Rewrite 0⋅∞ as a quotient.limx→0+xlnx=lim1/xlnx=lim−1/x21/x=lim(−x)=0.
6. Exponential forms. Take logarithms: y=fg gives lny=glnf.
limx→0+xx=elimxlnx=e0=1.
The 1∞ shortcut: if f→1 and g→∞, then limfg=elim(f−1)g.
limx→∞(1+x3)x=e3.
limx→0(cosx)1/x2=elim(cosx−1)/x2=e−1/2.
7. Squeeze theorem. If g≤f≤h near a, and g and h have the same limit L, then f→L too.
limx→0xsinx1=0, because −∣x∣≤xsinx1≤∣x∣.
But limx→0sinx1does not exist: the function oscillates between −1 and 1.
8. Combine fractions for ∞−∞.limx→0(x1−sinx1)=limxsinxsinx−x=0,
since the top is about −x3/6 and the bottom about x2.
Exam trap. L'Hôpital needs a genuine 00 or ∞∞ form. For limx→1x+1x2+1, simply substitute: the answer is 22=1.
Continuity
Definition.f is continuous at a if three things hold:
f(a) is defined;
limx→af(x) exists;
the limit equals f(a).
