Random variables and the CDF
A random variable gives each outcome of an experiment a number.
- A discrete random variable takes countably many values and has a PMF .
- A continuous random variable has a PDF with and .
The cumulative distribution function works for both kinds.
- is non-decreasing and right-continuous, with and .
- .
- For a continuous : , and . So and give the same probabilities.
- For a discrete : is a step function, and each jump equals .
Example 1. for .
- The PDF is : an exponential distribution with rate 2.
- .
- The median solves , so . That is below the mean of 0.5, because the distribution is skewed right.
Example 2: a step CDF. takes the values 1, 2 and 4 with probabilities 0.2, 0.5 and 0.3. Then:
- jumps to 0.2 at 1, to 0.7 at 2, and to 1 at 4;
- ;
- .
Expectation and variance rules
- Definitions: or .
- LOTUS: or . There is no need to find the distribution of .
- Linearity: . This always holds, even for dependent variables.
- Variance: and .
- . The covariance term vanishes for independent variables.
- For independent and : .
Example 3. For in Example 2:
- ;
- ;
- ;
- .
