Verbal Aptitude

Verbal accuracy comes from tracking sentence structure and evidence. First decide what a sentence says; then decide whether its grammar and implications support an answer. Avoid relying on how familiar a phrase sounds.
Parts of speech and agreement
Idea. A word's part of speech is the job it performs in context. A noun names something, a verb asserts an action or state, an adjective describes a noun, and an adverb modifies a verb or description. A sentence's main verb agrees with its subject, not with a distracting nearby noun.
Solved examples.
- Question. In “The careful analyst recorded the result accurately,” identify adjective and adverb. Solution. (1) “Careful” describes analyst. (2) “Accurately” describes how the action was done. Answer. Careful is an adjective; accurately an adverb. Trap. Function matters more than the common -ly ending.
- Question. In “Reading widely improves judgment,” what is “Reading”? Solution. (1) It names an activity. (2) The activity is the subject of “improves.” Answer. A gerund, functioning as a noun. Trap. An -ing form can also be a verb or adjective.
- Question. Choose: “Neither the editor nor the authors ___ ready.” (A) is (B) are (C) was (D) has been Solution. (1) “Neither...nor” typically uses the nearer subject for agreement. (2) “Authors” is plural. Answer. (B) are. Trap. Check the noun nearest the verb.
- Question. Find the main clause: “Although the sample was small, the pattern was consistent.” Solution. (1) “Although” subordinates the first clause. (2) “The pattern was consistent” stands independently. Answer. The latter clause. Trap. The first clause is not the main assertion just because it comes first.
- Question. Correct: “The report, together with its appendices, were submitted.” Solution. (1) Remove the inserted phrase. (2) The subject is singular “report.” (3) Use “was.” Answer. “The report, together with its appendices, was submitted.” Trap. “Together with” does not make a plural subject.
Tense, articles, and modifiers
Idea. Tense places events in time and can show completion or continuation. Articles depend on whether a noun is specific and on its initial sound. A modifier should sit beside the word it describes; otherwise a sentence may assign an action to the wrong person or thing.
Solved examples.
- Question. “By the time the review began, the team ___ the draft.” (A) finishes (B) had finished (C) will finish (D) is finishing Solution. (1) Both events are past. (2) Finishing preceded the review. (3) Past perfect marks the earlier event. Answer. (B) had finished. Trap. Use past perfect when the order of past events matters.
- Question. Choose: “___ useful method; ___ unusual result.” Solution. (1) Useful begins with /y/, a consonant sound: “a.” (2) Unusual begins with a vowel sound: “an.” Answer. “a useful method; an unusual result.” Trap. Decide by sound, not spelling.
- Question. Correct: “Each of the instruments have a separate record.” Solution. (1) Subject head is “Each.” (2) “Of the instruments” is a phrase, not the subject. (3) Each is singular. Answer. “Each of the instruments has a separate record.” Trap. Nearby plurals can mislead.
- Question. Fix the dangling modifier: “Walking through the archive, the labels seemed faded.” Solution. (1) The opener implies the subject that follows was walking. (2) Labels cannot walk. (3) Name the walker. Answer. “Walking through the archive, I noticed that the labels seemed faded.” Trap. The actor must follow the introductory phrase.
- Question. Choose: “The results of the second trial ___ reliable.” (A) is (B) are (C) has (D) was Solution. (1) Head subject is plural “results.” (2) “Of the second trial” does not change it. Answer. (B) are. Trap. Ignore nouns buried in prepositional phrases when locating the subject.
Vocabulary and idioms in context
Idea. Infer meaning from explanations, contrasts, examples, and tone nearby. Words such as “sound,” “qualified,” or “fine” may have several meanings. Idioms should be interpreted as complete phrases, not literally.
Solved examples.
- Question. “The estimate is tentative; it may change after testing.” Tentative means (A) final (B) provisional (C) careless (D) hidden. Solution. (1) “May change” signals uncertainty. (2) A provisional estimate is not final. Answer. (B). Trap. The clause after the semicolon clarifies the word.
- Question. Infer “mitigate”: “A second route will mitigate delays during repairs.” Solution. (1) The route helps with a problem. (2) It lessens delays without necessarily eliminating them. Answer. Reduce or make less severe. Trap. Do not infer complete prevention.
- Question. What does “The plan gained traction after the trial” mean? Solution. (1) Support increased after a successful trial. (2) “Traction” is figurative. Answer. The plan gained momentum or acceptance. Trap. Do not interpret it as physical movement.
- Question. “The account was coherent, though some dates were uncertain.” Coherent means (A) understandable and connected (B) certainly true (C) evasive (D) brief. Solution. (1) Uncertain dates do not prevent a connected account. (2) Coherence concerns organization, not truth. Answer. (A). Trap. Do not confuse clarity with factual certainty.
- Question. “Approval was qualified by two conditions.” Qualified means: Solution. (1) Conditions place limits on approval. (2) The word does not refer to a person's credentials. Answer. Limited or conditional. Trap. Let the phrase “by two conditions” resolve ambiguity.
Comprehension and narrative sequencing
Idea. Separate explicit facts, conclusions, and unsupported extensions. Preserve words that limit a claim, such as “some,” “usually,” or “during this trial.” In sequencing, pronouns, time expressions, and cause-effect relations constrain the order.
